Hello

My name is Gigi, I'm a multi-disciplinary artist that uses ceramics, metal, sculpture, and the occasional textile to start a discussion about mental and chronic illnesses. I also use my work to educate and advocate.

Artist's Biography

Gigi was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and moved to St. Louis, Missouri, at the age of five. They graduated from Whitfield College Preparatory and are currently studying at Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville (SIUE). They are a double major in Art Education (Bachelor of Science) and Studio Art (Bachelor of Arts). Gigi plans on attending graduate school and receiving a master’s in arts management and leadership and a master's in nonprofit management. They hope to work in the nonprofit community arts setting.

At the age of 11, Gigi was diagnosed with a chronic illness. As this particular malady is not outwardly visible, Gigi spent years suffering in silence, feeling as though they had to put on a daily “I’m fine” superficial appearance. These years of personal health struggles became a driving force in their work. Initially starting with ceramics due to the malleability of the material, they have since expanded to metals, sculpture, and textiles as well. While their work began as a personal therapeutic practice, it has evolved into a forum for an open dialogue among viewers regarding health and wellness. Gigi also uses their work as a form of advocacy.

Gigi’s artwork has been displayed in regional exhibitions including Atmosphere and Blue Hour at Intersect Arts Center (St. Louis, MO), the Annual Juried Student Exhibition at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (Edwardsville, IL), and The Emerson Young Artists Showcase at the St. Louis Artists Guild (St. Louis, MO). Gigi has also received awards in recognition of her artwork, namely the Paulette Myers Award in Metalsmithing (SIUE), and the Friends of Art Honor Award in Art Education (SIUE).  Gigi was also awarded the role of Gyo Obata Fellow through the St. Louis Regional Arts Commission and worked at Intersect Arts Center where they discovered their passion for arts administration.
